Breaking New Ground in Sound Design: The Unique Approach of The Wild Robot
In the new animated film The Wild Robot, directed by Chris Sanders, the sound design has become a groundbreaking aspect of storytelling, adding an extra layer of depth to the world of Roz—a robot voiced by Lupita Nyong’o. This unusual approach to sound was overseen by Skywalker Sound’s team, led by supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Leff Lefferts, with sound designer Randy Thom. The team took creative liberties with Roz’s sounds, opting for non-metallic, futuristic tones to set her apart from typical robotic characters.
Creating a Unique Soundscape for Roz
Roz is a robot who finds herself stranded on an uninhabited island, raising a gosling named Brightbill (voiced by Kit Connor). The film presents Roz as a robot with a friendly, understated presence rather than one that draws attention to her mechanical nature. To achieve this, the sound team avoided using harsh metallic sounds often associated with robots, instead crafting gentle pneumatic tones and soft, unfamiliar materials. This choice aligns with the concept that Roz, originally designed to help humans, should be unobtrusive, enhancing her character's warmth.
Sound as a Narrative Tool
The use of sound in The Wild Robot extends beyond character identity to establish a sense of reality within the animated world. Roz’s sound profile is designed to blend naturally into her surroundings, helping viewers feel the grounded nature of the story. When her sounds do become noticeable, it’s at carefully chosen, narratively significant moments that emphasize her emotional journey and interactions with others.
This subtle approach is also seen in the handling of environmental sounds, especially in the film’s opening, where viewers experience Roz’s arrival on the island through sound and imagery alone. From the crashing storm to the quieter moments of waves against rocks, these soundscapes provide depth without relying heavily on dialogue or music.
Balancing Consistency and Flexibility
Although Roz’s sounds follow an established pattern, the team was willing to adjust these rules for particular scenes. For instance, when Roz introduces Brightbill to Thunderbolt, a falcon voiced by Ving Rhames, there’s a distinct metallic sound as the falcon lands. This deviation was meant to highlight the weight and impact of the moment, underscoring Roz’s interactions in a humorous and grounded way, demonstrating how selective changes to the sound design can add layers to character interactions.
The Voice Behind the Robot
Nyong’o’s voice work added further dimension to Roz’s character. During initial recordings, the sound team experimented with vocal processing to enhance Roz’s robotic quality. However, Nyong’o’s performance alone was able to convey Roz’s evolution from machine to maternal figure. By subtly changing her voice’s tone and posture, Nyong’o’s portrayal brought Roz’s character arc to life, ultimately rendering additional vocal effects unnecessary.
Adding Light Moments to a Dramatic Journey
The sound team also incorporated moments of levity to balance the film’s intense themes. In one scene, Roz’s attempt to pick up a crab leads to a surprise interaction with a seagull, accompanied by an amusing “crab scream” vocalized by sound designer Thom himself. These humorous touches were strategically placed to bring balance to Roz’s otherwise dramatic storyline, easing the tone and creating a memorable and unique viewing experience.
Through inventive sound design choices, The Wild Robot team successfully crafted a distinct auditory identity for Roz that enhances the narrative and deepens audience immersion. The blend of unconventional sounds, strategic rule-breaking, and vocal performances has set a new benchmark for animation sound design, proving that sometimes, the smallest audio details can make the biggest impact.
