Healthcare Resources for Music Artists Following Chappell Roan’s Grammy Speech

Previously, we shared the speech behind Chappell Roan’s remarks at the Grammy Awards, where she addressed the lack of healthcare options and livable wages for artists in the music industry. Since then, discussions on healthcare resources for musicians have gained traction, with several organizations and industry groups highlighting available support systems.

Roan’s speech pointed to the financial struggles many developing artists face, particularly when it comes to accessing healthcare. While healthcare coverage remains a challenge for independent and emerging artists, several organizations provide assistance, including industry-funded plans, unions, and nonprofit services.

Healthcare Resources for Artists

SAG-AFTRA
Artists signed to major labels may qualify for SAG-AFTRA’s health plan, with monthly premiums ranging from $125 for individuals to $750 for families. The union’s health coverage is supported by label contributions, making it an option for many artists, including those who may not be actively releasing music.

Music Health Alliance
This nonprofit provides guidance on navigating healthcare resources, working with artists, industry professionals, and organizations like Universal Music Group and Sony Music. The alliance acts as a “concierge” service, helping music professionals find the best available healthcare options.

American Federation of Musicians (AFM)
AFM represents orchestral musicians, studio workers, and gig performers, negotiating employer-funded medical and dental plans for its members.

American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)
For artists signed to independent labels, A2IM offers healthcare plans with monthly premiums starting at $80. While these plans provide options, some in the industry have raised concerns over their limitations.

Entertainment Community Fund (ECF)
Similar to the Music Health Alliance, the ECF helps music professionals understand and access available healthcare plans.

Universal Music Group Launches Mental Health Fund

Following Roan’s speech, Universal Music Group (UMG) announced the launch of a mental health fund for music industry workers. The initiative, developed in partnership with the Music Health Alliance, aims to expand mental health access, funding, and care planning.

In a statement, UMG highlighted its ongoing collaboration with Music Health Alliance, noting that the new fund is intended to provide long-term mental health support for industry professionals.

While industry-wide solutions remain a work in progress, these resources offer some level of support for artists navigating healthcare challenges.
