New Hearing Health Fund Launched to Support Musicians

Hearing loss is a growing concern among musicians and music industry professionals, with studies showing that 40% experience noise-induced damage. In response, Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, in collaboration with Sweetwater, has launched The Hearing Health Fund to provide crucial support for those facing hearing-related challenges.

The Impact of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Continuous exposure to high sound levels can result in hearing loss, tinnitus, and other auditory issues. Research indicates that music venue staff are particularly vulnerable, with 70% exposed to noise levels exceeding daily recommended limits. Despite this risk, a significant portion report never using hearing protection, while only a small percentage consistently do.

Dr. Todd Page, Sweetwater’s in-house physician, emphasizes the importance of early detection. He explains that once hearing damage occurs, it cannot be reversed, making preventative measures essential. Many musicians assume it won’t happen to them, but the reality is that long-term exposure to high-volume sound can have lasting consequences.

What the Hearing Health Fund Offers

The Hearing Health Fund includes a free, three-part hearing screening with a certified audiologist, along with complimentary Etymotic Research ER-20XS High Fidelity Earplugs. The program provides a review of screening results with professional recommendations, general education on hearing health tailored to music industry professionals, and individualized guidance on personal sound exposure. Additionally, basic care is available for those already experiencing hearing disorders or loss.

What Can Go Wrong?

Hearing is a complex system, and various factors can contribute to both short-term and long-term hearing issues. Short-term problems can result from ear canal obstruction caused by infections, wax buildup, or foreign objects. Middle ear infections or allergies may also cause fluid buildup and pressure changes, affecting how sound is transmitted to the inner ear.

Long-term hearing issues are often more difficult to correct. Damage to the eardrum from trauma or chronic infections, wear and tear on the tiny ossicle bones, and the destruction of inner ear hair cells from excessive noise exposure are common causes. Other factors such as medications, tumors, smoking, and chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension can also contribute to hearing deterioration. Age-related hearing loss, known as presbycusis, typically begins in a person’s 50s but may start as early as the late teens, with high-frequency sounds being the first to be affected.

One of the most preventable causes of hearing loss in musicians is prolonged exposure to high sound levels. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends limiting exposure to 85 decibels for no more than eight hours. With every 3-decibel increase, the safe listening time is cut in half. For example, at 110 decibels—the level of a lawn mower—safe exposure time drops to just 30 seconds. A rock concert at 120 decibels? The safe limit is only seven seconds. Without proper hearing protection, ongoing exposure can cause irreversible damage to the cochlea’s hair cells, which are responsible for transmitting sound signals to the brain.
